Phone interviews are a common part of the interview process, allowing a Hiring Manager or Internal Recruiter to quickly assess if you are a good fit for the role in terms of experience and skills. It’s usually the first stage of any hiring process, so it’s important to get it right so you give a good first impression.
Speaking to candidates over the phone is something we do every day and have done for many years, so in this article we have shared 4 key tips on how to best prepare for a phone interview…
Be prepared
Preparation is crucial for any interview not just a phone interview, and the beauty of a phone interview is that you can have as many notes in front of you as you would like or need. Write down some answers to questions you think you could be asked about the job you are interviewing for and the company you are looking to join.
Read the job spec and pick out key skills and requirements needed and write some examples of how you have utilised these skills in previous positions. Offering examples holds far more weight than you just saying “yes I possess that skill”. We also suggest you do your research on the company, it always looks good and shows your keen if you know about the company.
Have notes ready
Having your notes in front of you during the interview is a great way to assist you in your phone interview. It’s not cheating, honest, you’re just prepared for the interview to help make the best impression possible!
Having notes in front of you will relax you and keep you focussed. There’s nothing worse than finishing an interview feeling you didn’t say everything you wanted. Make your notes easy to read and nail the interview!!
Have your CV in front of you to reference
It’s always helpful to have your CV in front of you when interviewing, as you have lots of info on your current and previous jobs. It will just act as a guide when answering questions. Also if the interviewer refers to a point on your CV you’ll be able to remind yourself what you wrote down.
Where should you take the call
We suggest that you do it somewhere you can concentrate, feel comfortable and speak openly. So maybe you could go to that place 10mins before your interview so you can prepare your notes and get yourself settled.
